Scott Joplin Memorial Concert & BBQ - May 24th, 2014

Scott Joplin Grave Site
The annual Scott Joplin Memorial Concert & BBQ at St Michael’s Cemetery. Music by The Paragon Ragtime Orchestra under the conductorship of Rick Benjamin. The final piece of music Maple Leaf Rag is played at the grave site of the composer. This year a young fan of the music was accompanied by his parents and brother to the delight of those of us who recognized his father - another Ric :>)

Ices and Bocce in Corona

The Lemon Ice King of Corona is a landmark institution and a must stop on a hot summer night.

A few short steps away there is a park with one of the best maintained bocce ball courts in the city and some of the best players gather there on hot summer nights to show off their skills.  There is no better place to go and hang out while you enjoy your ice - my favorite is rum raison!

PS1 Warm UP 6/29/13

Stopped by PS1 for the first Warm Up of the 2013 season to take in the vibes of the techno beat, drink some beers and grab a random mix of what in essence is a huge fun loud crowded house party in the courtyard of MOMA PS1. What makes it all the better is that my drivers license shows LIC as my residence and I get in for free ;-{)

An update on a prior posting to this plog

Received an eMail from the owner of the Metro Card Bike referenced in a prior posting and he pointed me towards this NYT article that I thought you might find interesting: (see June 2007)

Big City: The MetroCard Is the Medium, With No Particular Message By SUSAN DOMINUS

A New York City office worker has become a small-scale celebrity on wheels because of his elaborate artistic creations using old Metrocards.

My Flickr set of this years Mermaid Parade is almost finished (still needs some editing & additional uploads) but if you want to see more of his creations point yourselves here:

He has an extensive collection - just follow the links from my photo that he has listed as a favorite....

International Pillow Fight Day - NYC 2008

Noticed a gathering of mostly young colorful people carrying pillows and big stuffed bunnies in Union Square March 22nd. They were congregated around the station entrance across from Whole Foods near the Washington statue. After making some inquiries I learned that a big pillow fight was about to kick off at 3pm sharp. Stayed for about 45 minutes of what can only be described as your typical only in NYC mad crazy fun event. As it turns out this is an international event.

Jane's Carousel

The carousel renovated by Jane Walentas debuted at the Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival in October 2006. It is a special project that has been long in the making. It was built in 1922 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and purchased in 1984 by the Walentases at an auction was originally intended for Brooklyn Bridge Park, but was never given a place there. Ms. Walentas worked on-and-off on restoring it for nearly two decades.

Old Timers in LIC

There is an old factory building in LIC that hosts the work of internationally famous graffiti writers/artists. It sits across the street from PS1/MOMA.
Whenever I go to PS1, I always make it a point to walk around the Crane Street building and see what new pieces grace the walls.

Last Saturday - July 28th I had the good fortune to be there for OLD TIMERS DAY when some of the legendary pioneer writers of this art form got together for the day. It was great to see some of those old familiar tags and watch some of them doing their thing.
